About this deal

The artwork was also beautiful. The children featured were diverse, majority BIPOC, and were a great display of what most kids see regularly in public schools. I also loved the amount of all-girl sports pictures there were. Girl power! So I wouldn’t say I know better than Jeff Benedict because I definitely don’t. I don’t know anything about LeBron’s personal life save that he’s a proud husband and father. But I was also disappointed to find that in reading this, I learned little more. I hadn’t read much about his time growing up in Akron; I knew it wasn’t easy but Benedict gives about as full of a picture as possible. Beyond that…meh. Just a whole lot of meh. By no means was I a LeBron fan. I thought he was a turd after The Decision and based a lot of my opinion on Scott Raab's brilliant book "The Whore of Akron." Thoroughly enjoyed the book, could not put it down, would recommend to a friend, but do not need to read again. I give this book 3/5 stars because it barely scratches the surface of many of the facets of LeBron's empire. What is ironic is that for all of his mega-stardum, LeBron is fairly private. Windhorst is a friend and a former beat writer in Cleveland, so it isn't surprising that the stories in this book are almost entirely positive, with mere lip service paid to some of the failures. Hopefully there will be a book with more depth written about LeBron one day, and I'll be interested to read it.

I was also fortunate enough to find the Barnes & Nobel virtual story time session in which the illustrator, Nina Mata, narrated. Malta’s illustrations are beautiful, with a diverse representation of children, and sweet images that support the text. LeBron’s basketball skills are not his most impressive attributes. His brilliance, instincts, maturity and discipline all outrank his athleticism. These attributes explain why 20 years into his career, LeBron is still one of the best players in the world. An epic business story . . . The Dynasty goes deeper than anyone has before on the Beatles-esque collaboration among an owner, a coach, and a star player.” It was he and his mom throughout out his childhood trying to survive. When he started playing high school basketball, he was fortunate enough to play with some of his closest friends and had wonderful coaches helping him succeed. James came into high school below grade level, and never went to college. Where do you think his narrative voice comes from?

Probably a good book that I enjoyed but there was something about it I did not love (e.g. The writing style, the POV, etc.). I would only recommend to a friend if it was their "type" of book.

I was a bit worried, that it would drag on and the author would detail every game he played, but that didn’t happen. Only a few games were highlighted, as well as playoff games. LeBron James is the greatest basketball player of the twenty-first century, and he’s in the conversation with Michael Jordan as the greatest of all time. The reigning king of the game and the first active NBA player to become a billionaire, LeBron wears the crown like he was born with it. Yet his ascent has been anything but effortless and predetermined—the truth is vastly more interesting than that. Fantastic book. LeBron James is arguably the most impressive American athlete of all time. He has lived most of his life in public and his biggest flaw is HOW he announced he was going to play for the Miami Heat. When I saw this book about LeBron James, I was immediately intrigued. I did have to stop reading it a few times as I had other books to read, but when I finally finished it, I was glad I read it and learned a lot more about him than I knew previously. The high-caliber professionals supporting him remain mostly nameless and the acheivements just roll in. Lebron remains the smiley, generous person that no one knew when he was just a child. However, this is no clip job. Benedict writes scenes that make clear the extent of his primary reporting, putting the reader, to paraphrase a popular Broadway musical, in the room where it happens. You can practically see the goop in Miami Heat president Pat Riley’s hair as he seethes in resentment when James announces his departure from South Beach to return to Cleveland. “LeBron” isn’t just great sportswriting, it’s also vivid narrative journalism.

LeBron James: I have come a long way in my life and if not for my hard work and dedication I would not be where I am today. I am dedicated to the great game of basketball and I am grateful that god has given me the opportunity to play the game I love. Above all else my family is the most important in my life and I would go to mile high lengths for them. As a Ohio kid this was a fun read getting to reminisce on some of his best moments in Cleveland while also humanizing some of his missteps that temporarily turned him into the biggest villain of the sports world. Equally fascinating and enjoyable was the breakdown of his savvy business decisions that have made him a billion dollar man. LeBron really does not get enough credit for building a legitimate business empire and dodging nearly all the pitfalls of fame and wealth - you never find him on the scandal filled headlines unlike so many others in his echelon. Plus he’s been playing at a high level year in and year out in the NBA for 20 years now. That’s a superhuman feat. I didn’t realize that LeBron has a very small circle of business minded folks he trusts, and he has been with them for a while.A book I have below average feelings for and it would not come with a recommendation from me but I would mention it in conversation if related to the book topic at issue. Reporter: Out of the milestones you’ve reached and trophies collected, what do you consider your greatest achievement so far, and why? Lebron James as presented in this biography is a kid from a troubled family situation who was blessed not only with exceptional athletic talent but also a series of key mentors and a mother who sacrificed an incredible amount personally for him to have the best opportunities. He then built on these opportunities every chance he got not only to meet his goals as a player but his goals as a husband as a dad to provide for his family. I learned more than I expected to. LeBron is famously private and we only know what he wants us to know. And still I feel like Jeff Benedict was able to dig deeper than most have in the past. I knew that LeBron grew up poor but I didn't realize just how poor he was. LeBron is a surprisingly normal person given just how long he's been one of the most famous athletes on the planet. Since his sophomore year in high school he has been hyped as the next Michael Jordan( unpopular opinion alert: I think Jordan is overrated) and has had all eyes on him. The fact that he hasn't had any major scandals is crazy. I'd be a hot mess if I had his fame and money from the age of 18. Lakers’ LeBron James became the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, tallying 38 points to surpass Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s mark in a 133-130 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

An absolutely adorable book that reads as a rhyme and a daily mantra. It encourages kids to be the best they can be on easy to understand concepts that are attainable at almost every age. The book ends with a letter from LeBron James about how his I PROMISE School students have a daily mantra they say every morning to encourage them to learn and finish school. I loved it. They were excited. Of course, they’d been written about before, but everything had been LeBron-centric. Part of the reason he wanted to do this book was to pay homage to the people who made him who he was, and these kids were an integral part of it. So they were excited to get their due. They weren’t braggarts—there was a humility to them—but they also wanted to say, “hey, we were pretty good ourselves.” LeBron James: We all have our strengths and weaknesses Kyle and I am sure you have some as well, but I would consider myself to be good at basketball, cooking, and being a parent to my children. With hard work and dedication I have managed to jursically develop in these categories, obviously, it did not just happen overnight. I would not say I am bad at anything rather I am subpar at some things including free throws, three point shooting, and golf. Even though they are my weaknesses right now with loads of practice and work eventually they could turn into my strengths. The games were put in the present tense for a reason, to give the reader a greater sense of being there. And I just like the syncopated style of almost doing it line-by-line. There are only so many ways you can describe going to the hoop or making a jump shot. In short, there’s no shortage of material for a biographer to chronicle the current Los Angeles Laker, and Jeff Benedict’s comprehensive new “LeBron” does a masterful job of shaping that material into a cohesive and propulsive whole. This is a fast break of a book, slicing into the many mini-narratives that James has lived and artfully tying them together to create a portrait of a man who has, by his own design, remained an enigma except to those he decides to trust. Benedict has constructed a sort of sports opera fueled by the drama and emotion surrounding his subject, but never sensationalistic or unfair. Benedict clearly likes James, but he’s been around long enough — among the subjects of his 17 books are Tiger Woods and the New England Patriots — to steer far clear of hagiography. Reporter: LeBron, what would you say are the three words you'd use to describe yourself and why those three words?
